Summary of the Role:
The Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring safety and environmental programs to ensure compliance with environmental, health and safety regulations. This position is key to participating in and overseeing safety and environmental related audits and programs both internal and external.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
1. Works closely with staff in engineering, human resources, legal, operations, and research and development.
2. Provides technical safety and health support and information to production and corporate personnel.
3. Prepares written safety and health programs and policies.
4. Identifies company safety training needs and develops and coordinates safety training programs.
5. Develops annual company safety and health goals.
6. Participates in new product/process reviews, including process hazard analyses, operator training, etc.
7. Supports plant engineering to implement engineering controls to minimize safety and occupational health
hazards.
8. Supports plant personnel in selection of appropriate personal protective equipment.
9. Promotes safety and health awareness through internal company memoranda, newsletters and specific training programs.
10. Serves as member of the environmental health and safety committee.
11. Participates in company occupational safety and health committee.
12. Assists as necessary in implementation of a hazard communication program and preparation of reports.
13. Reviews process-operating procedures/records and provides input for safety and health considerations.
14. Understands federal and state occupational safety and health regulations and monitors regulatory changes as they occur.
15. Provides technical support to corporate and plant personnel to ensure compliance with applicable occupational safety and health regulations.
16. Advises manufacturing plants and corporate staff of regulatory changes with which the plants must comply. Sufficient advance notice should be provided so that compliance on the effective date of new regulations is ensured.
17. Audits practices and records of manufacturing plants to ensure compliance with company programs and federal/state occupational safety and health regulations.
18. Monitors lost-time injuries/illnesses and worker’s compensation claims.
19. Reviews plant safety committee meeting minutes and safety inspection reports and follows up as necessary.
20. Reviews injury/illness and noninjury incident investigation reports and follows up as necessary.
21. Participate in, and continuously improve, the facility’s certification programs (ISO 14001, ISO 45001, Asp100, etc.) to achieve plant goals and objectives.
Education and Experience:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Excellent working knowledge of OSHA, EPA and local, state, and federal regulations as they relate to environmental health and safety.
2. Ability to execute emergency response, behavior based safety and risk assessments.
3. Must have previous knowledge and understanding of industrial hygiene sampling, hazardous waste, fire safety and ergonomics.
4. Ability to communicate with all levels of the organization both written and verbal; must be able to effectively collaborate to drive cultural change.
5. Ability to effectively train all levels of employees.
6. Must have a high level of attention to detail, the ability to multitask and excellent problem solving skills.
7. Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
8. Ability to promote continuous change priorities while achieving desired results.
9. Knowledge of 5S is preferred.
10. Knowledge of materials and material requirements is helpful.
